shuru’aat means beginning in urdu.
Another word for ‘beginning’ is ibtida. Let us do our ibtida with a sher by Ghalib.
ishq se tabiyat ne zeest ka maza paaya
dard ki dava paayi dard-e-be-dava paaya
The following is a rough translation:
through love temperament found the relish of life
it found cure for pain and a pain without cure
This sher is from the 4th ghazal of Ghalib’s diivaan. it was composed in 1821.
Enjoy the rhythm in the sher. Read it with a small pause after every two words, and a longer pause after the first line (‘misra‘). Like this –
