    February 3rd, 2024

    shuru’aat means beginning in urdu.

Another word for ‘beginning’ is ibtida. Let us do our ibtida with a sher by Ghalib.

ishq se tabiyat ne zeest ka maza paaya
dard ki dava paayi dard-e-be-dava paaya

The following is a rough translation:

through love temperament found the relish of life
it found cure for pain and a pain without cure

This sher is from the 4th ghazal of Ghalib’s diivaan. it was composed in 1821.

Enjoy the rhythm in the sher. Read it with a small pause after every two words, and a longer pause after the first line (‘misra‘). Like this –

    ishq se
    tabiyat ne
    zeest ka
    maza paaya
    [pause]
    dard ki
    dava paayi
    dard-e-be
    dava paaya
